Somerfield doubles up

Somerfield is celebrating again, after landing its second fresh produce award of the year.

Following its triumph in the Re:fresh Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year, category, sponsored by Foods from Spain, the Bristol-based supermarket chain completed a successful 12-months at the Retail Awards, organised by Checkout Magazine and Independent Retail news.

The prize was handed out at the Grosvenor House hotel, in London, on Thursday. Dominic Edwards, head of Somerfield’s fresh produce department, told freshinfo: “It’s only fitting that the Re:fresh Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year did the double by picking up the Retail Industry Produce Retailer of the year.”

There were two independent retailer categories. The Independent winner was JR Baldwin, Spar, while Tates walked away with the Independent company-owned gong.

The Retail Awards covers food and drink categories other than fresh produce. Asda was awarded Flower Retailer of the Year, while Waitrose won its second successive Multiple Retailer of the Year crown.
