Some 440 Somerfield employees will lose their jobs as the supermarket chain closes two distribution centres in Rainham, Essex and Welwyn Garden City.

Defending the cuts, Logistics group Excel, which managed the two centres, insisted it was working hard to try and find alternative employment for those affected by the cuts.

Somerfield is not alone. Earlier this week, rival Morrisons also closed depots in Kent and Bristol, leaving around 1,600 of its staff redundant. This followed the closure of its Warrington Depot last month where 700 job cuts were made.
