Solinda mini watermelons are set to hit supermarket shelves across the UK, promising to be a trendsetter in the fresh fruit market, according to market tests in 2005.
The company hopes that the approaching summer season will be the year that the UK abandons its scepticism towards watermelons when the Solinda mini extra sweet variety goes on sale.
Watermelons have never been as popular in the UK as they are in European countries.
But surveys across the country have shown that British consumers have had a very positive reaction to the Solinda variety.
The watermelons weigh around 2kg and will be marketed as a fruit that is easy to carry and store, as well as delicious to eat. The very thin skin and few seeds also mean less waste and better value for money.
The Solinda variety is low in calories, a good source of vitamins A and C and high in lycopene.
Solinda is the result of strong collaboration between Anecoop in Spain, Peviani in Italy and Sygenta Seeds.
Selected specialist growers follow rigorous quality controls and environment-friendly crop management procedures to bring the highest quality fruit to the table.
Solinda watermelons will be available in the UK from May to September.
