Solanum has announced the re-introduction of red, white and blue potatoes in support of the England rugby team's world cup performances down under.
The potatoes, which have been grown and sold commercially for nearly 100 years, are exclusive to Solanum and will be available at Waitrose stores.
The ëHighland Burgundy Red' has a fluffy texture with a mild sweet flavour. The ëArran Victory' represents the white with its vivid blue purple skin and white flesh. While the salad blue has a vibrant blue skin and similar coloured flesh which retains its colour when cooked
Solanum commercial manager Laura Brown-Waite said: “We are delighted to be supplying these almost forgotten varieties of potatoes. The potatoes have been selected because of their unique colouring and taste characteristics.”
The varieties will be available sold loose in Waitrose stores from late November. Waitrose buyer Peter Cooke said: “These varieties have been carefully grown by speciality growers in Scotland for Solanum and Waitrose as part of their Varietal development programme.”
