Soil science seeks fresh understanding

The Institute of Professional Soil Science (IPSS) is to host the launch of its new initiative in London next month.

The Professional Competency in Soil Science Initiative will be launched at the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington on 20 July and will be hosted by IPSS chairman Dr Bruce Lascelles.

The British Society of Soil Science (BSSS) and its professional practice arm, the Institute of Professional Soil Science (IPSS), has the mission of promoting the understanding, relevance and use of soil science.

The IPSS said in a statement: “The promotion of professional standards and competency in soil science will contribute to the achievement of our mission. Soil and the processes that operate within it influence a wide range of outcomes across society and the economy.”

“We are launching this first tranche of task-based competency statements which will be freely available for use by organisations contracting out work with a soil science component.”

The profitability of land-based industries, the effectiveness of environmental improvement and regulation, the richness of wildlife habitats and even the playability of sports turf are all dependent on the application of soil science, it said.
