Smoothie industry needs to reduce waste

The smoothie category needs longer lasting products to reduce wastage in winter, when the fruit drinks prove less popular, according to smoothie company The Big J.

The Big J smoothiepack and Smoothie Smile products use an aseptic packaging process, which blocks out light and air to prevent fermentation, to increase shelf life without compromising taste or quality.

The smoothie category, which sees some brands retailing at more than £2 per serving, has expensive wastage when products are left to go out of date.

But The Big J smoothies last a minimum of six months in storage and can be kept in ambient temperatures.

Josephine Carpenter, founder and managing director of the Big J, said: “Our 100 per cent pure fruit smoothies are manufactured in exactly the same way as shorter shelf life bottled smoothies, It is simply the packing we chose, for example tetra pak, Elopak and an aseptic PET bottle, that ensures that the product remains as fresh as the day it is made.”
