The shelf life of west-coast US organic apples has been dramatically increased through trials carried out by OrchardWorld.

Mike Jobbins, the company’s technical director, said that on arrival in the UK by container, under the right temperature-controlled conditions and using Smart Bags, fruit now has the capacity to last for up to 15 days on shelf.

The modified atmosphere Smart Bags, developed by Longlife Solutions, have more than doubled the average shelf-life expectancy of the fruit.

“We chose Gala for one of our retail customers, and were pleased with the result," said Jobbins. “Compared with the conventionally polybagged sample fruit pressure remained 7.4 per cent higher."
