Sir Stuart: won the vote but still under fire

Sir Stuart Rose won a key vote at Marks & Spencer’s AGM this week - but the chief executive failed to quell rising opposition against his executive chairman role.

A motion presented by the Local Authority Pension Fund called for the high-street retailer to find a new chairman by July next year.

Almost 40 per cent of the shareholders who voted were in favour of the motion, while 23 per cent of voters failed to back Sir Stuart’s re-election as a director of the company.

Sir Stuart has come under fire in recent months for his dual role as chairman and chief executive.

He is due to retire from M&S in July 2011.
