The European Commission has approved aid of e5 164 569 for Sicily's citrus sector. Farm commissioner Franz Fischler said the aid was for plans compatible with the common market and will involve various actions and activities planned by Sicily for investment in the sector as well as promotion and dissemination of information. "This decision will enable Sicily to foster the rapid progress of a sector that is important to its economy,” said Fischler."

The planned aid has finally been allowed to go ahead following a two-year scrutiny process by the commission and the completion of Italy's own national citrus plan.
