South Humberside Onions is celebrating its 30th year harvesting niche new-season onions. “We are very proud of new season South Humberside Onions,” said sales manager Paul Davey. “They are grown, stored, graded and packed on our own farm specifically with our wholesale customers in mind. New season English onions have been considered the poor relations of the English onion crop for a long time, but the national crop is now in the hands of a few dedicated professional growers for whom quality of skin finish and shelf life are a priority.”

The Daveys produce 15 per cent of the national drilled new-season crop at their Wootton Wold Farm where production is overseen by Edward Davey. “No two years are ever the same,” he said. “This year’s unseasonably cold May has made around one to two per cent of onions bolt and produce seed heads, these bulbs cannot be sold as they are unviable. I think we have been very lucky, we understand from industry reports that up to 70 per cent of bolters have been seen in other crops.”

Harvest of the 2006 crop starts around June 19 and new season onions are available to customers from the beginning of July. South Humberside Onions are distributed throughout the United Kingdom and are available in 10kg, 20kg and 25kg branded nets.
