Parents in Sheffield are not helping their children eat their recommended five daily portions of fruit and veg, with two thirds of children claiming they do not get any included in their evening meal.

In a survey of seven-14 year olds, commissioned by Green Giant, 89 per cent said they knew they should eat 5 A DAY, but 85 per cent said they were not getting any in their packed lunches or school dinners, according to Sheffield Today

Three quarters of the children studied also said they had no vegetables in school meals.

Some 51 per cent of the children surveyed named carrots as their favourite vegetable, with sweetcorn coming in second.

A paediatric dietician for Sheffield Children's Hospital, told the website: “Part of the responsibility of parents is to include fruit and veg in their diets to encourage children to make the decision to include them in theirs.”
