Fresh produce imports into the port of Sheerness are on a steep decline, leaving the town considering other options, according to a report in Kentonline.
The port is run by Peel Ports and the move to containerisation of fresh produce imports in recent years has left those ports geared to palletised fruit such as Sheerness facing lower volumes.
Kentonline reported that Danish firm Vestas is looking to build an offshore wind turbine and factory at the site.
The volume of fresh fruit and vegetables coming into the UK via the port of Sheerness has fallen 18 per cent in 2011, according to Kentonline.co.uk.
The 2010 total of 440,000 tonnes was already below half of the 2003- 04 figure of one million tonnes.
