Sainsbury’s has greened up its Taste the Difference soft-fruit offer with the introduction of consumer-used recycled plastic packs from UK packaging manufacturer and supplier Sharpak.
The move has seen R-Apet material, which uses a minimum of 60 per cent Apet from plastic drinks bottles that have been used and sent for recycling by consumers, and 20 per cent in-process regrind, replace the standard SP range.
Mark Tollman, European business manager at Sharpak, said: “We have acknowledged retailer initiatives to reduce packaging waste and we are working hard to provide environmental material options and find ways that as a business we can reduce our environmental impact.
“R-Apet is an environmental material subsitute that can easily replace Apet or PVC, offering the same material characteristics. This is a major development for the industry and Sharpak is proud to be leading the way.” Sharpak has invested £15 million in new equipment and facilities in the last three years to improve its Kent site.
