Sharp Interpack is laying down its commitment to further reducing its impact on the environment through innovative design and products that go further than any others on the market to reduce waste.

The company's target for 2010 is to implement the “three Rs” - Reduce, Reformulate and Recycle.

Food packaging has enabled convenience shopping, allowed for greater consumer choice, reduced food waste, freed up leisure time and contributed to food hygiene and security. But at the same time, packaging has become the subject of much media attention as a symbol of a wasteful consumer society.

Sharp Interpack and its Sharpak brand have made a clear commitment to put carbon reduction at the top of its agenda for everything it does, with some outstanding results.

As part of the company’s ‘three Rs’ programme, Sharpak has invested £2 million in a system that has dramatically reduced in-house waste.

Andrew Copson, deputy managing director at Sharp Interpack, in Yate near Bristol, said: “As we move into 2010 our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint has never been stronger.

“The greatest challenge we face is meeting the demands of the customer and at the same reducing levels of waste, but it is a challenge we are able to meet head-on.

“That is why we are committed to implementing our three Rs programme as we go forward in 2010.”

When Sharpak introduced its r-PET punnet into a leading UK supermarket, the equivalent tonnage that was saved through its innovative design was the equivalent of 10 double decker buses or 21 African elephants.

Sharp Interpack has been recognised for its work in reducing the carbon footprint after winning a Starpack award and a commendation in The Manufacturer Awards 2008.

In January 2010, Sharp Interpack also launched the c-LOW mushroom punnet, which has a carbon footprint which is 23 per cent lower than conventional punnets.
