The campaign began last October and the crop is up 1,500tonnes on last season to 6,000t. Fruit size is smaller this season but some 700t are destined for the UK.

'We are working Triumph, a variety exclusive to Israel,' said product manager Rob Cullum. 'It particularly suits the UK market.' Sizes range from 14s to 26s and are all packed in 2.5kg cartons. Agrexco is investigating the possibility of pre-packing fruit in Israel in time for next season.

Cullum believes the unusual-looking fruit is becoming increasingly popular among a clutch of UK consumers. 'Whereas a few years ago, consumers looked at sharonfruit as an odd-looking tomato, it has now become a regular purchase.'
