Growers of Fuji apples from the coastal province of Shandong in eastern China have begun to harvest their fruit. Exporter Cheney Chen said: “Almost all the bags are off Fuji and farmers are busy picking their apples.
We are currently receiving over 120 tonnes a day and we expect to peak at 180t, the harvest will be over by 23-24 October and we believe the first frost will come around that time.”
Fruit size is small than last season in the province and peaking on counts 88- 138 compared to last season’s 64-80 counts.
However, quality is much improved thanks to fine summer and early autumn weather conditions, reported Chen, who said: “Fruit has coloured up very well and we believe the apples this year will have good keeping quality.”
