Search begins for top supermarket cop

The search for a groceries code adjudicator has begun with the Department for Business Innovation & Skills advertising the new post last week.

An appointment is expected to be announced in Parliament in November. The adjudicator will be in post by the end of March next year and work a three-day week, earning a salary of £98,000-£120,000 pro rata.

Sarah Dawson, NFU horticulture board chair, said: “From a growers’ point of view, we want someone who will rapidly engage with the industry, is confident and knowledgeable and will gain their respect.”

The British Retail Consortium and its membership have long opposed the appointment of an adjudicator. A spokesman told FPJ: “The retailers support the groceries code and we believe it has been effective since it was introduced without the need for an adjudicator….but given we are going to get one… we need someone to do the job well without adding pointless extra cost to retailers.”
