UK-based Univeg Katopé has announced the first arrivals of the new season's mangoes from Israel, with higher yields expected compared with 2011.
According to the company, consumers are increasingly seeking out ready-to-eat, premium varieties, many of which are available at the start of the Israeli season.
Exporters have been bolstered by the new seafreight service via France, which has significantly reduced costs by minimising the need for airfreight.
"We recognised Israel as a good source of mangoes and we see definite benefits in fruit quality as a result of the very short seafreight shipping times," said Univeg procurement manager Clive Bayston. "We will start off the season with speciality mango Aya & Maya and the move into Kasturi."
More recognised varieties such as Keitt and Kent will become available towards the end of August, with the Israeli season lasting until October, when Brazil and Ecuador become the principal sources.
