Jeremy Scott, chairman of the Marden Fruit Show Society, put the record straight regarding rumours surrounding this year’s apple production, at the press conference of the National Fruit Show (NFS), held last week.

He started the conference by saying: “For some reason, the national press has insisted on reporting that this has been a record year for English apples and pears, but it has not.

“It has not been a great year due to hail problems, but it has been a good year regarding the colour of the fruit and the size.”

Scott added that the quality of fruit has been very encouraging, and hoped that growers will get a good return this year.
