The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) has set up a new horticultural technical interest group to join its list of specialist groups.

“This is an important area that was just waiting to be filled, and is a great opportunity for SCI to take the lead in promoting all aspects of horticulture on a commercial basis to as wide a network as possible,” said SCI chief executive Andrew Ladds.

“By engaging fully and working closely with commercial growers, skills councils, colleges, universities and learning networks, SCI can offer a wealth of expertise and bridge the gap between science and business to help professional horticulturists develop the necessary skills and contacts they need to operate in both arenas.”

Richard Hirst, head of horticulture at the National Farmers’ Union, has given his full backing to the SCI initiative. “I believe that with its extensive and well-established contacts spanning the science, business and professional development worlds, both in the UK and internationally, SCI is in a unique position to provide technical, professional and business support to horticulture professionals, whether they work in the commercial sector, research or in amenities,” he said.

Michael Paske, former vice-president of the NFU, also supports the scheme. “Horticulturalists need to be able to operate at a commercial level. I believe the industry is changing and I believe that SCI has the necessary expertise to give members the skills and opportunity to develop and grow in keeping with the changing face of the sector,” he said.

The group’s initial meeting and conference session has been arranged for early February.
