Parents are backing popular chef Jamie Oliver’s school dinners campaign in their thousands. A survey carried out by the British Market Research Bureau found that some 75 per cent of parents it questioned would be prepared to pay more for their children’s school dinners if they included more fresh food.

The research also found that two-thirds of parents blamed government or local education authorities for the state of school meals and less than 20 per cent thought it was caterers’ fault.

This research adds more fuel to the flames fanned by the television series Jamie’s School Dinners which highlighted how little was spent per head on food and the poor quality of the offering.

Tens of thousands of parents have signed Oliver’s petition on the website Feed Me Better which he was due present to Downing Street. But he is anxious not to be caught up in the political fray despite media reports that the prime minister’s office is keen to include him in an advisory capacity in its plans to revamp school lunches.
