Marks & Spencer is launching the first cross between a grapefruit and a satsuma to hit the UK.
The Sweet Spring, supplied by MMG Citrus, is the size of a satsuma but has the characteristics of a grapefruit in that it can’t be peeled but has to be eaten in segments like a grapefruit
The variety was first produced in Japan in 1947 by crossing a Uedo Satsuma with a Japanese grapefruit (Hassuku), and is now being grown for M&S in Knysa, South Africa
It is said to have “the detectable tang of a grapefruit” but with a sweeter taste more akin to a satsuma.
M&S senior fruit technologist Emmett Lunny said: “We love bringing out new varieties of fruit for our customers to try - our new Sweet Spring is a great option for those who want to try something a bit different and also the more discerning citrus fan who is looking for an interesting alternative to their usual orange.”
Sweet Spring went on sale on Monday.
