SAP urges trade to step up on RFID

Alexander Renz of SAP AG has urged the produce industry to monitor IT developments and to prepare for an increasing role for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in the near future.

Speaking at the Re:fresh Conference Renz said: “For smaller companies it may not be time to invest just yet, but companies should be seeing technology, such as RFID, as a part of their future investments, it is a good time to get educated.”

Renz, director of industry marketing retail, said that the supply chain needs to consider the physical world and RFID allows this to happen. He said: “We are trying to create a global standard. RFID is not just a better barcode but through a tiny chip we can obtain information and communicate knowledge across the chain. By using these technologies we can create a consistent picture of the world around.”

The electronic product code is unique to every individual item across the globe and according to Renz the tags can be attached to a variety of items. He said: “These can be attached to tags, pallets, cases and the information can be transmitted back to the desired location.”
