S&A claims early gras record

Worcestershire grower S&A Produce has broken the record to get the first English asparagus into a Tesco store by four weeks.

The first batch of asparagus arrived at Tesco’s Evesham store on February 21, and will be available at further stores from this week.

S&A, of Great Witley, said the earliness of the crop was down to improved growing methods. The asparagus was produced in glasshouses with an underground heating pipe passing hot water under the plants, three months ahead of the natural English season.

Daniel Martin of S&A said: “We know we face stiff competition from other asparagus producers, so it is a real honour to know we have broken the UK record.”

The English asparagus will cost £1.38 per 100g pack. “We’re going to be selling it locally first, to give people in the area the first taste of their own locally grown produce,” said Tesco’s Simon Dryell. “Although we stock asparagus all year round, English asparagus is by far the most popular.”
