Univeg Katopé UK has posted a drop in turnover but a rise in pre-tax profit.

The firm’s most recent accounts, which cover the year ending 31 December, 2013, were posted on Companies House, and also show a fall in sales of 3.55 per cent for the year.

This corresponds with a fall in turnover, from £79.5 million in 2012, to £76.7m in 2013. A spokesperson for Univeg UK said that the drop in sales was “partly due to the director’s decision to withdraw the business from unprofitable lines at the expense of turnover.”

Despite this, the firm raised pre-tax profits from £663,000 in the year ending 31 December, 2012, to £724,000 in 2013.

The spokesperson added: “Market conditions remained very challenging due to the prevailing economic conditions, but were helped by a much drier summer compared to the previous year in the UK.

“The produce industry, particularly the sector supplying the multiple retailers, continued to be highly competitive. The company has maintained a broad base of customers, and is actively pursuing a strategy to further increase market share during 2014.”

While the Univeg Group employs more than 8,000 people worldwide, Univeg UK has just over 210 employees, and is based in Spalding, Lincolnshire.
