Salanova mark II heads for UK

Rijk Zwaan was showcasing the second generation of its Salanova lettuce varieties at AGF Totaal and is keen to get the product into the UK supermarkets. "We have been talking with a couple of UK supermarkets," said Rijk Zwaan's Marcel Barten. "These products are in the trial stage at the moment and therefore lack the volume to substitute an existing product. While we recognise that shelf space is limited and there is not always room for new products, we are confident that these new Salanova strains will make their mark.

The three on show were Salanova 79-31 R2, which is a one-cut ready type, said Barten, and a good alternative to butterhead, Salanova Virgile R2, which has already knocked lollo biondo and lollo rosso out of the portfolio of retailers in Australia, Germany and Switzerland, and a Salanova prototype, which is endive style and soft, and predicted by Barten to be a hit in salad mixes.
