Sainsbury’s British Salad Growers Roadshow has clocked up a world record for the longest salad bar. The new milestone was set on Saturday at the Hull show when the Greenery, which organised the feat, served 1,316 fresh salads from a 69’ salad bar.

Chef Noel Goulding led a 12-strong team of choppers and servers "It took a lot of planning and precision timing to deliver that amount of servings in two hours," said the exhausted chef. "I’m very proud of the volunteer colleagues that attended from local growers Humber VHB and J Baarda."

Each portion featured five salad items with an optional vinaigrette or salad cream dressing. More than 5,000 slices each of capsicum and cucumber, 80 whole heads of celery and iceberg and 4,000 cherry tomatoes were shared out at the event.

Greenery UK set up the record attempt on behalf of Sainsbury’s for its roadshow which reaches a climax this weekend at the Totally Tomato festival in Chichester.

The store was delighted with the endeavour. "It was great to be involved in a massive local event working with local growers and serving local people," said Sainsbury’s Hessle store produce manager Gary Firm.

The Greenery has deemed the roadshows a success and event co-ordinator Tony Bilsborough said the world record was "the icing on the cake."
