If you’re the sort of person who’s ever wondered who would win in a face-off between Tigger and Spider-Man, you could be about to find out.
Sainsbury’s is trialling a line of Marvel-branded clementines in a move that observers say is a response to the phenomenal success of Tesco’s Disney-branded easy peelers. Tesco’s Disney range is believed to be worth as much as £80 million.
Marvel heroes such as Spider-Man, Iron Man and the Invisible Woman are appearing on easy peeler packs in Sainsbury’s. The supermarket is trialling the format in 196 stores at £1.69 per pack, with a view to a wider rollout.
The fruit is sold under the Chico brand, packed by MM Global for Fun Fruits Ltd. Packs offer kids the chance to get a free Superhero Squad DVD when they collect three tokens.
“We just think it’s a fun way of getting kids to eat their 5 A DAY and making clementines fun,” said a Sainsbury’s spokeswoman.
“We want to test the water and see if this does have an impact with kids finding them attractive first, and then see if we will roll it out further.”
