Sainsbury's turns purple

Sainsbury’s has re-launched its purple carrot offer for the third successive year and is claiming a bumper crop this season.

The vegetables, named ‘Purple Haze’, are grown in Norfolk and this year the retailer is expecting 40 tonnes.

Russell Crowe, carrot buyer, said: “When we first started selling purple carrots in our stores, customers were slightly dubious as to what they were, having never seen a carrot that colour before.

“Within a year we had won over our customers confidence and purple carrots are now a regular feature in our produce department.”

The carrots are available in selected Sainsbury’s stores now, priced at 99p, and the retailer is running a series of recipe suggestions for consumers on its website.
