Sainsbury’s is to quit its swanky headquarters in Holborn to move to a cheaper and more environmentally friendly site on the King’s Cross development site.

The old site, complete with recipe testing kitchens and a large auditorium, has been dubbed an unnecessary expense by investors, prompting the retailer to move to less costly premises.

The new site is set to cost substantially less than the £17m-a-year rent the Holborn Circus building demands, and its carbon emissions are set to fall 40 per cent below the industry benchmarks, said Sainsbury’s.

Some 2,000 staff currently work in the 330,000sqft Holborn office. The new site will stand at just 250,000sqft, but a spokeswoman said there would be no job losses. The supermarket will make the move in 2011.
