Sainsbury’s targets fruit snacking market

Sainsbury’s is set to launch a range of fresh fruit lines specifically targeted at the fast-expanding snacking market.

The aptly named Fruit Snacks range will feature grapes, strawberries and cherries, as well as twin-packs of apple & soft citrus and plum & soft citrus. All products will be available in packaging solutions designed specifically for the snacking.

The range will initially be available in Sainsbury’s Local and Central formats, and merchandised in the high impulse area of the store.

Sainsbury’s Fruit Snacks buyer Dominique Schulenburg said: “This range capitalises on the opportunity for more impulse purchasing of fruit. Impulse fruit purchases (fruit bought and eaten out of the home) make up a tiny five per cent of the fresh fruit category sales at present and if you compare this to 50 per cent plus for confectionery, clearly the opportunity for these lines is huge.”

The packs will also feature advice on healthy eating, advising consumers on the number of “portions” each pack contributes towards their 5-A-Day.

Packs will retail from 79p to £1.49 depending on the variety of fruit or fruits involved and will be available in selected Sainsbury’s stores from June 23.
