Sainsbury’s will this week introduce a giant blueberry, sourced from New Zealand, into its berry category.

The retailer is asking its customers to dust down their Trivial Pursuit box and find all the missing Scrabble pieces and boost their brain power this Christmas with a new super-sized blueberry

The “size of a grape”, the fruit - named Nui - is around three times larger than the average blueberry. Sainsbury’s fruit buyer Craig Sibbitt said: “Blueberries have long been known as power packs of nutritional goodness, and this bigger variety makes it even easier for customers to get their daily dose. Their giant size makes them convenient to grab on the run or munch on as a healthy snack.

“The actual pigment that makes the blueberry blue is a major antioxidant and it has even been shown that eating blueberries can help brain function - useful after a few Christmas beers.”

Blueberries are recognised as one of the 14 superfoods due to their potent mix of nutrients including flu-busting vitamin C and gut-healthy fibre - whilst remaining extremely low in calories.

Sales of blueberries at Sainsbury’s have increased over 200 per cent in the last three months and the new giant blueberries have been developed due to increase in consumer demand.

A punnet will retail at £2.49 and will be available in 80 plus stores from December 15.
