On the comeback trail

Sainsbury’s appears to be showing the early signs of launching a recovery, according to the latest figures from TNS. The UK’s number three supermarket chain has shown a consistent uplift in its market chare since a nadir of 15.3 per cent last September and in the 12 weeks to February 27, TNS figures put its slice of the UK food retail sector at 16 per cent.

This is still down on the same time a year ago, when Sainsbury’s held a 16.2 per cent share, but it does represent a reversal of what has been a steady decline in recent years.

TNS communications director Edward Garner suggested that Sainsbury’s is beginning to deliver on its promise to redress supply chain problems. Sainsbury’s for its part, said it is encouraged by the figures, but acknowledged that there is “still a lot of work to be done”.

Tesco continues to top the TNS list, with 29.9 per cent of the market, with Asda in a distant second place with 16.9 per cent.
