Under the new arrangements, 100 existing Shell petrol stations across the UK will be expanded to include Sainsbury's Local format convenience stores.

The decision comes following successful trials at six sites. The emphasis at each of the stores is on convenience with a range of fresh produce and prepared salads, ready-meal solutions as well as bakery off-licence, non-food and car care products.

'The Sainsbury's Local format is a great success,' said Sainsbury's ceo Sir Peter Davis. 'Eleven of the top 20 performing stores are Locals and three of these are on Shell forecourts.' The development could prove significant for Sainsbury's as Tesco already has its own range of Express convenience stores with Tesco petrol stations. It will also help bring Sainsbury's closer to many more customers without having the outlay on new sites and petrol station facilities.
