Sainsbury's shines in latest market share figures

Sainsbury’s is the only top four supermarket to have increased its market share in the 12 weeks to 3 October.

The latest grocery market figures from Kantar Worldpanel show respectable growth in the market at 4.1 per cent, ahead of grocery inflation, which stands at three per cent.

Sainsbury’s recorded growth of 5.6 per cent and increased its market share by 0.2 percentage points to 15.9 per cent, in contrast to Tesco which has a 30.9 per cent share that remains largely unchanged. The performance from Sainsbury’s backs strong interim results posted last week.

Another highlight from the figures is a robust performance from Waitrose, with growth of more than twice the market average at nine per cent and an increase in share from four per cent to 4.2 per cent.

Ed Garner, communications director at Kantar Worldpanel, commented on the performance of the UK’s fourth and second largest operators: “We have seen Morrisons’ growth rate slow this period as it contends with the strong annual growth it posted a year ago. Similarly, Asda continues to see its share under pressure with a drop of 0.1 per cent, but this is better than in previous months and we are currently seeing the re-launch of Asda’s core own-label range through the Chosen By You campaign.”
