Sainsbury's pledges £1m to Fairtrade farming fund

A £1 million fund to help farmers in the developing world to join the Fairtrade initiative has been drawn up by Sainsbury’s.

The Sainsbury’s Fair Development Fund, which will be run by Comic Relief, is intended to help African farmers find new routes to market.

The Fairtrade Foundation, Traidcraft and Oxfam will help the supermarket connect with farmers.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin said the new fund would help “dramatically extend the benefits Fairtrade creates to more farmers and workers in new areas, which have previously not been Fairtrade accredited”.

The projects under consideration include helping rural farmers in Uganda sell dried fruits for export, and a credit fund for small-scale peanut farmers in Malawi to buy seeds or machinery to boost production.
