The top contributions to the Bramley apple sector were honoured in the fourteenth annual Brammy Awards last week.

The Bramley Campaign took the opportunity to recognise manufacturers, caterers and members of the media who have made an outstanding contribution to the sales and promotion of Bramley apples during the last year.

Sainsbury’s was named Best Multiple Retailer and, for the first time this year, the public voted to give Mark & Spencers a People’s Choice Award for its puff pastry Bramley apple pie.

Ian Mitchell, chairman of the Bramley Campaign, said: “Not only does Sainsbury’s hold a significant market share of all Bramleys sold, it has been active in developing sales, leading to increased purchases and rewarding growers. Sainsbury’s stands out as the clear winner.”

Phil Vickery was hailed as the top Bramley media chef.

The award for the best individual Bramley apple pie went to the Mr Kipling brand, the best other Bramley dessert honour was scooped by Asda’s Bramley apple crumble and best Bramley apple juice went to the Four Elms brand.

Tesco’s Finest pork and Bramley apple sausages were named the top savoury Bramley product and the best Bramley apple sauce went to Colman’s Bramley apple sauce.

Asda’s Wiltshire-cured Bramley apple roast ham was held up as the most innovative Bramley product.

The product categories were judged by an independent panel of experts, including Sam Fortescue, from The Grocer, and Karen Barnes, from the Good Housekeeping Institute.

Mitchell said: “Even though Bramley apples are unrivalled in terms of taste and texture, we are always impressed with the sheer volume and diversity of Bramley products available to the consumer. This year we were literally bowled over with the high standard.

“By using Bramley, manufacturers, caterers and the media continue to ensure that it remains an important ingredient to the modern day consumer - which, of course, is great news for the British Bramley growers.”
