Sainsbury’s has continued to lose market share to rivals Tesco and Asda, according to latest figures from market research group TNS.

Sainsbury’s, which last year was overtaken by Asda and dropped to third place among the supermarket groups, saw its share fall to 16.5 per cent for the 12 weeks to February 1, compared with 17.3 per cent for the same period last year.

The TNS figures revealed that Tesco is accelerating in a declining market. The country’s biggest supermarket group saw its share of the market rise to 27.2 per cent for the 12 weeks to February 1, compared with 26 per cent for the same period last year.

The figures also showed that Asda increased its share to 17.1 per cent over the same period, up from 16.7 per cent in the previous year. Morrisons share rose from six per cent last year to 6.5 per cent. While Safeway continued to lose its market share, slipping down to 8.9 per cent compared to 9.8 per cent last year.
