Sainsbury's claims UK market firsts in the ethical arena

The UK's third-ranked retailer Sainsbury's has reiterated its ethical credentials in the wake of the parliamentary select committee's report on gangmasters.

The store claimed in a statement that in the led the field in the UK as far as ethical practices were concerned: "We take this issue extremely seriously and were the first supermarket to address it by working with the Ethical Trading Initiative," the Sainsbury's statement read. "We were also the first supermarket to introduce a supplier code of conduct. We pride ourselves on having a good relationship with our suppliers and regularly visit them to monitor practices."

MPs who published the report last week criticised government and supermarkets for the failure to rid the UK fresh produce industry of abuses in the employment of casual labour.
