Sainsbury’s is to plough £40 million into its farm development groups over the next three years.

The supermarket has already invested £21m in the groups which span agriculture and horticulture, it revealed to 1,000 growers and farmers at its Farming for the Future conference at Stoneleigh Park last week.

The groups focus on making progress on sustainability, driving innovation and efficiency and reducing environmental impact.

The retailer trumpeted its work on UK top fruit. It sold 34,000 tonnes of top fruit last season, pointing out one in every three British apples and pears sold in the UK was through Sainsbury’s.

Chief executive Justin King said: “Creating and maintaining supply chains that are resilient in the face of challenges such as climate change and food security will be crucial in the future.”
