Sainsbury's in organic top spot

Sainsbury’s has regained the lead as the UK’s number one supermarket for organics.

Latest TNS data shows that its own-brand range - Sainsbury's SO organic - grew its share of spend to 31.9 per cent ahead of rival Tesco’s 29 per cent. The figures relate to the 12-week period to February 26, 2006.

Sainsbury's SO organic manager, Ruth Bailey said; “We are very proud to be the number one organic supermarket. Sales since our re-launch have been excellent showing that more and more of our customers are keen to try organic and find Sainsbury's a credible and trustworthy brand. It iss no longer a niche market, but one of our fastest growing food categories.”

The store relaunched its organic range in September last year and according to its own transaction figures, sales have increased by more than 20 per cent year on year.

Overall, produce represents around one third of all the retailer’s So Organic sales, Bailey said. She believes lower prices and a rapidly increasing range of organic products are behind the trend. For example, it has launched organic frozen vegetables last year as one of more than 100 new organic products across all sectors. This is soon to be expanded with organic Fairtrade grapes, avocados and mangoes.
