Tony Sullivan, Sainsbury's produce general manager: Celebrating success and encouraging innovation and excellence

Sainsbury's has named its growers of the year for 2004.

Overall Sainsbury's Grower of the Year was Allpress Farms, of Chatteris in Cambridgeshire, which was rewarded for its innovative work with baby leeks, developing volumes that have reduced Sainsbury's dependence on imported product.

Salad grower of the year was David Baarda, the Humberside producer that introduced the black tomato and midi cucumber into Sainsbury's stores in the last 12 months. The black tomato, in particular, generated massive media interest and both have performed well in-store.

Kent's Paul Mansfield was singled out for his work on English apples and West Sussex ornamentals grower Donaldsons for its reduction of chemcial input through a well-managed environmental programme.

Allpress will appear on in-store merchandising material and also be featured in the Sainsbury's magazine.
