Sainsbury's is set to convert to biodegradable labels created from 100 per cent recycled paper.

Working with labelling experts Leading Edge, the new labels will be lending a more natural look to the retailers organic produce range.

Initially on little gem, the labels, which are compostable will be phased in across the entire range in the coming months.

The move follows on from Sainsbury’s trials with biodegradable plant fibre packaging from Malaysia.

Currently being used for organic tomatoes, the retailer is intending to roll out the packaging, made from plant fibre residues from things like straw and sugar cane, across the whole range.

Manufactured by BioPak, the plant fibre trays are sourced from Malaysia and are derived from 100% waste material and contain no bleaches or hazardous chemicals.
