Sainsbury’s has resumed membership of the British Retail Consortium (BRC).

The UK’s number three supermarket group suspended its membership from March until the end of April, following an argument about whether the organisation was tasking its views into account.

The rift came after Kevin Hawkins, director general of the BRC, backed Tesco’s approach to food labelling in a television interview and omitted a mention of Sainsbury’s Wheel of Health system.

Tesco is opposed to Food Standards Agency plans to introduce a "traffic light" labelling system. However, Sainsbury's has backed the proposals and introduced a red, amber and green coding system to show fat and salt levels.
