Jan Shaw, Sainsbury's director of corporate relations, has been named the first woman and retailer to chair the board of directors at IGD, the food and grocery industry think-tank.
Shaw has a brief to develop ways of improving the food and grocery industry's value for consumers in terms of effectiveness and efficiency.
Other significant challenges include issues arising from the Curry Commission, which investigated the future of food and farming in the UK.
