French and Spanish cauliflowers were being sold next to a British sign

Sainsbury’s claims over its British cauliflowers have been called into question following a spot check investigation.

The supermarket was found to be advertising “100 per cent British” cauliflowers that turned out to be from Europe.

Investigators for Field Agent found that French and Spanish cauliflowers were sold under the banner in stores across the UK.

Field Agent is an iPhone application which allows users to request consumers to complete tasks - such as price checking - for them.

Field Agent said French lettuces had also been advertised as British at a Sainsbury’s in Horsham, West Sussex.

A spokesman for the chain told The Mirror it had been forced to look abroad -because of poor growing conditions at home.

He said: “We have asked all the stores -involved to check their signage to ensure it reflects the -correct country of origin.”
