Sainsbury’s is hoping to bring the concept of the allotment into the kitchen with the launch of a Living Salad.

Following on from the success of its Living Lettuce range, with a growing lettuce being sold in a pot, the retailer is hoping to grow the market further.

The new Living Salad feature four varieties of salad plants, all growing in a tray. Buyer Clancy McMahon said: “It’s a modern version of the garden allotment - designed especially for the kitchen window sill.

“Customers can pick the leaves they need for their salad straight from the living plant, and leave the rest growing in the tray until they are ready for more.”

She said the sales in the live plants range, which also include pea shoots and peanut shoots, are being fuelled by the growing demand for super fresh foods, and the desire to grow your own, but without the effort.

“The demand for growing salad plants suggests that all of us dream of becoming Felicity Kendall in The Good Life, even though we may not have the time nor the opportunity to do it ourselves.”
