Prepared salads to ready-meals manufacturer Uniq is set to axe jobs after becoming yet another supplier to lose a major chunk of business with Sainsbury’s.

The company said from April 2005, around 180 jobs are to go from its Spalding site when its contract for prepared salads with the retailer ends.

A statement from the company said: “Annual sales from our Spalding site will be impacted by the loss of £12 million of business with J Sainbsury, following their decision to consolidate further their supply base in the intensely competitive prepared salads market.”

The company said it was consulting with staff over the move.

Uniq is the latest company to fall victim to Sainsbury’s ongoing rationalisation of its fresh produce supply base.

In the last few months the retailer has announced it is dropping Worldwide Fruit from its apple supply base, and, on potatoes, it has cancelled its relationship with MBM.
