Safeway decision delayed by six days

The Competition Commission has asked for, and been given, more time had been due to deliver its verdict on the four investigated suitors of Safeway.

The Commission should have handed its recommendations to trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt this afternoon [Tuesday].

However, the DTI extended the deadline by six days to next Monday on request.

The Commission reportedly asked for more time following a request last week for a further meeting by one of the parties involved in the investigation, which is widely believed to have been Asda.

"I have decided to give the Competition Commission a six day extension to ensure that the views of all parties and the group on the issues that have been raised regarding these mergers are accurately reflected in the final report," said DTI minister Jacqui Smith.
