Reports in the weekend press suggested that Sainsbury's and Asda are in talks about how to divide Safeway between them. The two alleged potential buyers dismissed the rumours on September 23.
Safeway has been tipped as a takeover target for the past few years by retail analysts, but some believe that Asda and Sainsbury's would be unlikely to agree on any joint deal given the fierce competition between them.
Sainsbury's is the second-largest retailer in the UK after Tesco followed by Asda, part of the Walmart group.
